Terrestrial water systems include surface and subsurface water in streams, rivers, lakes, the unsaturated zone, and aquifers. These bodies of water are hydrologically connected and exchange water, solutes, and particles at their boundaries. Terrestrial water systems are dramatically influenced by anthropogenic activities and climate change.
Achieving sustainable development of water resources is especially challenging in water-stressed environments. Unsustainable development involves short-term exploitation without considering the negative impacts on ecosystem integrity and long-term ecosystem services. These services include water supply for various purposes, water purification (e.g., contaminant degradation and nutrient cycling), flood protection, erosion prevention, local climate regulation, and recreational activities.
